Rainy season: Ruta Secreta has a higher chance of same-day or last-minute cancellation than our other hikes during the rainy season.
We monitor the forecast closely before the tour and evaluate the weather conditions on the night of the hike. Rain can make this trail unsafe, so we may need to cancel for safety reasons if conditions are not suitable.
We also cannot start this hike after 1:00 a.m., since we need enough time to complete the route and return before the afternoon rains become more likely.
If we need to cancel, we will do our best to offer another hike, such as El Pikacho. If the alternative hike has a lower price, we will refund the difference. If no hike is possible, or if you prefer not to change hikes, we will give you a full refund.
This tour has a fixed 11:00 PM pickup in Xela for the best chance of clear skies, visible lava, and sunrise views.
This demanding and rarely traveled route leads to a secluded lookout near the base of Santiaguito’s active Caliente dome, offering the closest perspective that Gagxanul Tours provides of the volcano’s activity. The active crater sits roughly 1.5 km away, giving us a direct view of one of the most consistently active volcanic systems on Earth.
Despite the proximity, the viewpoint sits on an elevated ridge separated from the volcano by forest and a massive ravine more than 240 meters below us. This terrain naturally channels the lava and pyroclastic flows into the ravine rather than toward the ridge, with additional terrain and safety information available at the bottom of this page. During large eruptions, ashfall can still reach the viewpoint, and we provide N95 masks to help reduce irritation.
The hike begins with around two hours of steady climbing through dense cloud forest before easing into more gradual terrain surrounded by thick jungle-like vegetation. Some sections flatten out and even descend slightly as the route approaches the viewpoint. Hiking time varies depending on the pace of the group. Along the way we often hear and occasionally spot wildlife, including rare birds such as the Horned Guan.
We aim to reach the viewpoint before sunrise, when eruptions are most visible against the darkness. As the sun rises, the full scale of Santiaguito slowly comes into view. We usually spend several hours at the lookout depending on weather and how the group is feeling, preparing breakfast and hot drinks while watching the volcano. The open terrain around the viewpoint also makes it an excellent place for tripods, photography, and timelapses.
Once the group is ready, we begin the return hike, which usually takes around three hours.
Early morning conditions are usually clear and stable, but weather in the mountains can change quickly, and visibility is not always guaranteed.

Santiaguito usually erupts every 15–60 minutes. On a typical morning from the lookout, it’s common to see:

Open Full GalleryThe lookout sits well behind the vegetation line in a stable forested area, separated from the active drainage ravine by more than 240 meters of elevation difference and roughly 550 meters of lateral distance from the main flow channels below. There are no signs of recent volcanic activity near the viewpoint, such as fresh volcanic rocks or burnt vegetation. We also monitor Santiaguito’s activity closely and will cancel tours if the volcano shows signs of unusually extreme activity.
